Let’s take a stroll down the book aisle at Target… Let’s browse the virtual bookshelves on Amazon… Let’s sit for a while and read a few pages at Barnes & Noble… Let’s get some investing books for kids on our bookshelves, already!
In school, our kids learn the basics of math, all the way through calculus. They learn about angles, fractions, solving for x, decimals, and more. And these are all important concepts. But where are the mandatory classes about investing?
Once kids get out of school, they’re expected to manage a checkbook and pick out stocks for a 401k plan! How is young adult supposed to know how to do these things if they weren’t taught when they were younger.
According to Warren Buffet, the Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway and one of the worlds best all-time investors, “Sometimes parents wait until their kids are in their teens before they start talking about managing money — when they could be starting when their kids are in preschool.”
Luckily, plenty of money savvy people have written some informational and engaging investing books for kids – and we can all learn a thing or two from them.
Why should you buy investing books for kids?
It’s simple. The more financial information we expose our kids to, the better off they’ll be. The more we make money part of the conversation at home, the more that they’ll pay attention to it as they grow.
As an adult, one of my favorite topics to read about is investing and various aspects of running a business. These are things that kids at any age can read about. So it’s always a good idea to invest in some investing books for kids.
What to do if your kid isn’t interested in investing?
First off, don’t lose heart if your kid isn’t interested in reading about investing. It’s not always the most exciting topic, even for adults. As I’ve said before, if you can make the experience fun – or if you can illustrate concepts with real-world examples – you’re more likely to engage your kids.
When money doesn’t feel abstract, they have more fun and are more interested in learning more about it.
So be sure to phrase the experience of reading a money book to your kids in a fun and positive way. Mine often respond well when I can apply something tangible to it. Read this book, and you’ll be able to make more money, honey.
